The Four Days of Dunkerque is a cycling race organized in the Hauts-de-France region.
In the year 1955, a team of enthusiasts led by Rene Quillot created this cycling event. There were talks about making it 5 days with 5 stages.
This race will cover about 1,000 kilometers through the roads of the Hauts-de-France region. After departure from Dunkirk, the riders have traditionally traveled to the mounts of Flanders followed by the Mounts of Boulonnais. Then to the hills of the Artois & to the Cap Blanc-Nez as per the various editions. The relatively flat relief of the course makes it especially the rendezvous of the road & sprinters.
The “4 Jours de Dunkerque” is a very tricky name as it is actually a 6 day staged race. The core stages include relatively flat courses where the importance will be given to the Sprints. Later, on Saturday the 5th stage, also called the queen stage is where the riders face the toughest climbs of the route. This day decides the GC.
The Sports Director, Mario Aaerts said-
“Our classic riders Nikolas Maes, Jens Debusschere, Fredrick Frison, and Marcel Sieberg along with Jelle Walleys will mark their return to the competition.”
The unlimate goal of the 6 staged race is to prove ourselves in the attack. As there is no appointed leader, all have freedom to express themselves and who will win does not make a difference.
We did the similar thing in the Tour de Romandie. Our Sprinter is Jens Debusschere. If needed, he will be our man for that. All guys must take this as a preparation for the Belgium Tour and make a strong impact
2 big names are Arnaud Demare & Sylvain Chavanel, not more top riders at the start.
It is tough to predict where and how the race will be decided. As there are only 4 World Tour teams, there is less control among them.
The 1st stage has some cobblestone sections from Paris to Roubaix, hence we can expect only a medium sized group to make it to the finish.
The 2nd stage & 3rd stage does seem to be a prey for Sprinters, but not the 4th day. The final 5 kilometers are up & down, so riders will have to climb a steep hill of 10% in the laps.
For the last day, we can expect another Sprint. For GC, we have to go day by day.
