The 2016 F1 World Championship is coming to a end—there are now just 3 races left on the 2016 schedule—but battle for the title is still very much alive, albeit between the 2 Mercedes Team AMG participants only.
The 1st of the final 3 races is on this weekend in Mexico, only the 2nd time in recent history that the country is hosting the F1 Gran Premio de Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez Mexico. This means the track, the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez situated in Mexico City, is still very much new to most drivers & teams.
In addition to its rich past, what makes the Formula 1 Gran Premio de Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez different is that it is run at an unusually high altitude of 7,218 feet, making it the only race of its kind being competedat such height. The thinner atmosphere that comes with this altitude comes with it’s challenges. With just 78 percent of the oxygen found at sea level—the car’s performance will be put to test, and some of the issues relate to less power and lower cooling ability.
The layout of the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City is an unique one, with long straights but almost tailor made low-apex-speed corners. Top speeds are amongst the best of the current calender, with the cars touching almost 230 mph right upto the Turn 1. This is helped by the altitude of the track, which nullifies drag effect.
Grip levels are quite low, as the turf was new laid only a year back. The climate can pose it’s challenges, with both warm conditions & heavy downpour possible. The current prediction for Sunday’s race is interval showers & a peak temperate of seventy degrees F (twenty one degrees C). Pirelli has selected its medium, soft & supersoft tires for the Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez Formula One Mexico race.
Entering into Saturday’s qualifying & Sunday’s race, Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg is on top of the 2016 Drivers’ Championship with three hundred and thirty one points. His colleague Lewis Hamilton is 2nd with three hundred and five points & Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo is 3rd with two hundred and twenty seven points.
